Chinese poetry is sometimes called “poetry and songs”, as poetry and songs are close­ly associated. Though some poems have been transposed as songs, most of the poems are recited, known as [langsong] .

Chinese literature is incomplete without its poetry. Many of the poets were rulers and statesmen, right from early times. Emperors such as [Cao Cao] , [Li Shimin] ; generals such as [Yue Fei] were also poets.

Due to the “Imperial examination” system, many top civil servants, including prime ministers, were also poets. They include [Wang Anshi] , amongst others.

The best approach to Chinese poetry is to look at the poems themselves. Out of the thousands of poetry written through the centuries, the book selected six well-known poems, one of them is reproduced below. It was written by a famous poet [Su Dongbo] .

Prelude to “Water Melody”

When will the moon be clear and bright? With a glass of wine I ask the blue sky

I do not know up in the heavenly palace; What year is it tonight?

I would like to ride the wind to return; Yet I fear the crystal and jade mansions

These places are much too high and freezing; Dancing with my light shadows…;

It does not feel to be in the human realm

Moving around in the scarlet mansion; Beneath the carved windows

Dazzling lights shines upon the insomniacs; Why should I bear any grudge?

Men experience sorrow, joy, separation or reunion; The moon may be dim or bright …Full or wane

Such circumstances are difficult to be perfect, since the beginning of time

May we all be blessed with long lives? Share the loveliness[1] … Thousands of miles apart.
