As we know English words are composed of 26 alphabets,
arranged from left to right. The Chinese characters, on
the other hand, are made up of combinations of about a
dozen or so “strokes", known as [bihua]. (The word stroke
Stroke is used in a very general manner. It could be a
stroke, a hook, an angle, etc).
There are relatively few types of strokes, the
composition and combination of these strokes form various
Chinese characters.
The common
strokes include:
Horizontal stoke [heng]

Vertical stroke [shu]

Downward stroke to the left [pie]

Downward stoke to the right [na]

Upward stroke to the right [ti]

Dot [dian]

Right angle stroke [zhe]
